What annual quote demand teaches you about marketplaces
Matching is where a marketplace either compounds or leaks.
Quote demand is the total value of the quote requests a platform generates. It is not revenue, not gross merchandise value, and not transaction volume, and the discipline of keeping it distinct from all three is what makes it useful.
Say what the number is, and what it is not
A quote request has a value: what the service would cost if it happened. Sum those across a year and you have a measure of the demand passing through the platform. It is a demand measure, not a performance measure, and stating that plainly is the only way it stays informative.
The temptation to present it as something larger is strong, and it is the reason the metric has a bad reputation in some quarters. A platform that reports quote demand as if it were revenue has not exaggerated slightly, it has reported a different quantity. The fix is a definition that travels with the number wherever it is used.
Why it is worth measuring at all
It sizes the market you actually touch rather than the one in a market study. It makes segments comparable: which geographies, seasons and request types carry value rather than count. And it exposes the conversion cascade, because every step from request to booking is a ratio applied to this number.
It is also the only figure that lets you reason about the cost of a missed request. If a segment carries significant demand and converts poorly, the loss has a magnitude, and that magnitude justifies or refuses an investment in fixing it.
The cascade is where the business lives
Each transition is a diagnosis. A drop at qualification is a capture problem, usually a form asking the wrong things. A drop at distribution is a coverage problem, meaning there is demand where there is no supply. A drop at answer is a supply engagement problem, and it is almost always caused by earlier delivery of poor requests. A drop at conversion is a matching problem, and it is the hardest and most valuable to fix.
Measuring the cascade in value rather than in count changes priorities, because the segments that carry value are frequently not the segments that carry volume.

Where marketplaces leak
The classic leak is disintermediation, and it is usually treated as a policing problem when it is a value problem. Participants leave the platform when the platform stops adding anything after the introduction. The durable answers are the ones that make staying easier than leaving: handling the parts nobody wants to handle, holding the record of what was agreed, resolving the disputes, and carrying the payment.
The quieter leak is coverage. Requests arriving where no capable provider exists are pure loss, and they are invisible in conversion metrics because they never reach a provider. Measuring unmet demand by geography and by type turns supply acquisition from a general growth activity into a targeted one with a known value attached to each target.
Seasonality is structural, not noise
In most service marketplaces demand concentrates sharply. In group transport, school and event calendars produce peaks that dwarf the baseline, and the platform is judged on the peak.
That has an engineering consequence and an economic one. The system has to absorb multiples of average volume without operational headcount scaling with it. And the annual figure has to be read with its distribution, because an annual average describes a year that never happened.
The habit worth keeping
Define the metric precisely, publish the definition alongside it, never let it drift towards a more flattering interpretation, and measure the cascade in the same units.
A platform that does this can say what it is worth and where it loses value. A platform that does not has a large number in a deck and no idea which of its problems is expensive.
